You got your Saalt Wear reusable period underwear and used it - amazing! So… now what?
No worries, we got you covered. We know it can seem a little daunting when trying to figure out the proper way to clean reusable period care products and you likely have lots of questions. So let’s go over the basics!
When you remove your used Saalt Wear, we recommend rinsing them with cold water. Gently rub the gusset in your hands until the water runs clear. This will help prevent staining as well as remove a majority of the flow from your Saalt Wear. Then, gently squeeze the excess water out of the gusset and body fabric. Now, you can set your Saalt Wear aside until you’re ready to do laundry.
When you wash them, we recommend doing so either by hand-washing or in the washing machine. If you wash period underwear in the washing machine, the delicate cycle is the way to go! Using cold water is also a great choice as this will help protect the gusset. If you plan on washing them with other clothing (You can wash your Saalt Wear with other clothing?! Yes!), we recommend putting your Saalt Wear in a delicates bag.
Once your Saalt Wear is clean, proudly hang it to dry!
A few extra tips to help your Saalt Wear remain at its best for as long as possible:
We’ve just launched our Cotton Tea Dye Collection. Tea Dye? What does that mean? Are there any extra steps needed to take care of those? Great questions!
It was time for our Cotton Collection to get some spunky new colors, but we wanted to do something extra unique. Tea is one of the largest exports from Sri Lanka, where our amazing Saalt Wear is crafted. Using the waste that is already available in the environment just makes sense! So we partnered with our supply chain to introduce three new colors. These new colors are Pink Chai, Matcha Green, and Red Hibiscus, which are all tea-dyed colors from ethically sourced dye made from tea waste (organic material that is a byproduct of the tea plant processing). How fun is that??
**Psst! And we now offer a Cotton Bikini in Heavy absorbency in these colors! And have you been looking for sizes 3XL and 4XL? They are available right now! Check them out HERE.
As for whether these need to be cared for differently than the rest of your Saalt Wear - the answer is nope! You can take care of these just like you care for the rest of your Saalt Wear. 🙂
Are you a visual learner? We get that. Watch this video of Saalt Coach Liz showing you how to wash period underwear for that little bit of extra help.
Take good care of your Saalt Wear, and they will take good care of you!
]]>But wait! You’re wearing your Saalt Wear leakproof underwear. Could it really be? No leaks? You go to the bathroom just to check and, hey, look at that! No stains or marks on your pants and when you pull your underwear back up, you feel dry and clean. Can it be true??
YES! Saalt Wear leakproof underwear is a great choice for light bladder leaks! You shouldn’t have to worry about enjoying your life. You should be able to barrel-laugh and sprint across the beach without a care. So we made underwear that can help you do that.
But wait…aren’t these period underwear? Technically - yes! Saalt Wear was originally created as a reusable period care solution. It was designed to take the place of those uncomfortable and unreliable pads and panty-liners that just don’t quite meet your needs. Then we realized that Saalt Wear could be so much more! There are all kinds of wetness that we experience every day, not just our monthly periods. So can’t there be underwear that protects you any day of the month from any of those leaks? Absolutely!
Impossible! How does that work? The top layer of the gusset pulls down wetness and traps it in the inner layers (this is not reduced down to only period flow). Any discharge and even those stubborn bladder leaks can be wicked away and trapped, leaving you feeling fresh and dry. AND Saalt Wear is specifically designed to prevent odor as well. It is the full package!
But urine is often thinner fluid than period flow. So how can it absorb it as fast? Yep, that is true! Urine is a different consistency than period flow. As urine is thinner, it will need a stronger gusset to absorb it than you would for period underwear. So you will want to shop for that need differently than you would for your flow. If you need coverage for light bladder leaks, we would recommend our Regular or even Heavy absorbency Saalt Wear. And if you need something that can handle a bit more, Heavy or Super absorbency is definitely the way to go.
Sounds too good to be true, right? Getting to ditch the disposable pads and liners that move around, stick to your legs, and leave you feeling self-conscious all day sounds like a dream! We know it can take a bit of bravery and an initial investment, but the trade-offs are life-changing! Never having to purchase a disposable again and gaining the confidence to do what you love without having to think about bringing a spare pair of underwear or planning around bathroom breaks is the kind of freedom we are all about here at Saalt.
And don’t worry, we offer amazingly helpful Saalt Coaches and a robust Saalt Bliss Guarantee to ensure that you feel supported every step of the way. Saalt has got you covered!

]]>Having your period should not be a defining factor in your ability to feel sexy, powerful, beautiful, and confident. That’s why we have specifically designed many Saalt products to not only allow for but also to encourage that side of you to come out of its shell.
The Saalt Disc is one of the most commonly considered reusable period products when it comes to getting frisky on your period. Menstrual discs are unique in that they are one of the only inserted period products that one can wear during penetrative sex. The Saalt Disc will sit in the higher and wider space of the vaginal canal called the vaginal fornix. It uses its rim to rest in place, so you won’t even notice it’s there! As you start to “heat up,” the cervix will move higher in the vaginal canal and take the disc with it. This plus the super soft and flexible basin of the disc creates the space needed for a penis, fingers, or toys to be inserted.
Additionally, using a disc can make the experience a bit less messy since it keeps your period contained. Some don’t mind the mess - and we love that for you! But it is a particularly nice option for those who like to keep their periods more private during intimacy.
Something you may not have considered when thinking about sexy period care is period underwear! Generally, the thought of period underwear likely brings to mind saggy bottoms and comfortable but not-so-cute fabrics and designs. You should be able to dance around in your underwear to Beyoncé any time of the month with confidence! So we came up with our Lace and Mesh Collection for our Saalt Wear leakproof underwear. And guess what? We just dropped gorgeous fresh colors and new styles!
The Lace and Mesh Collection was designed in Paris and combines the beauty of design with the strength of our leakproof gusset. You will see lovely designs in this collection such as that of our Mesh Thong and Lace High Waist. Or perhaps you are looking for something more bold and go for the French Cut. There are so many options to choose from!
Additions to the collection include even more coverage and higher capacity so that you can feel confident in look AND feel. We will now be offering the Mesh Hipster in Super absorbency. We have also adjusted the gusset length to support more front coverage. Another fun addition is the French Cut High Waist with a full gusset (yep, that’s front waistband to back waistband) option. Sacrificing style for protection will no longer have to be a consideration when choosing your period care. These styles will come in the lovely new colors Moonlit Mauve, Mountain Sage, Blue Rain, and Amber Stone.
Feeling sexy on your period with Saalt is also expanding to more people, with our size range in the Mesh Collection being offered in sizes XXS-4XL. Yes! We have extended sizes on both ends of our size range to provide more of our wonderful Saalt enthusiasts with the most comfortable, beautiful, and protective period underwear on the market.
We hope you feel empowered in however you choose to period - whether that’s running a marathon, preparing for your honeymoon or anniversary, or even watching your comfort show with a bowl of popcorn. Saalt is here to support you however you choose to live your element.
]]>One significant barrier to women’s equality is education, and two of our incredible partners, HER International and Style Her Empowered (SHE), make it possible for more women around the world to have access to these resources. There are different barriers to receiving an education depending on the culture and community, but one large reason keeping these young girls out of school is the financial burden that funding their educations creates on their families. Through our partnerships with these amazing organizations, 1,510 scholarships are provided annually for girls in rural Nepal and Togo.
We have had the great honor of watching these women and girls grow in their knowledge, skills, and confidence. One of these young women is Elolo. Since graduating with SHE, Elolo has gone on to bring electricity to her neighborhood and join SHE Togo to coordinate education sponsorships for girls across 21 rural villages.
Not only is school education important, but it is also important for girls to have the necessary education about their bodies and options when it comes to their menstrual cycles and how to care for themselves. Many women are held back from school or work during their periods, which can greatly hurt their ability to support themselves and their families. The Karat School Project in Cote d’Ivoire holds various workshops to teach about these topics and empower girls to make decisions that are best for their bodies. How incredible is that?!
Getting reusable period care and education into the hands of teens closer to home is also dear to our hearts, which is why we love working with The Flow. The Flow works with under-resourced Black and Latina communities in California to provide culturally specific and multilingual education about reusable period products. With so many teens struggling to afford period care and many schools only offering disposable options, this leaves these teens vulnerable during times of the year when they aren’t in school, such as summer and winter breaks. Reusable options give these teens the security that they need to go about their days without having to worry about caring for this basic function.
These and so many more organizations across the globe are working every day to support the women of the world and propel them forward in their lives and communities. Here at Saalt, we hope to be able to have a small hand in pushing these organizations forward and helping them continue to serve our sisters and friends.
To celebrate International Women’s Day, we are donating 2,500 cups to one of our other fantastic partners - I Support The Girls. Through their A.S.H. Kit program, ISTG directly supplies domestic violence survivors, those going through menopause, and non-binary people with the basic essentials they need to live their element.
We encourage you to check these organizations out and support them however you can! Whether it is a post on social media to spread the word or taking a trip yourself to be on the front lines, the women of the world need to support one another if we are ever to reach the heights we are capable of.
You can learn more about these organizations on their websites or you can check out our Saalt Impact Report. Thank you for supporting Saalt so we can continue to support these incredible organizations and people.

]]>One of the things you are likely doing in preparation for your getaway is checking your calendar and wouldn’t you know it, you are supposed to start your period on the first day of break! We bet this sparks a whole host of questions for you, and our Saalt experts are here to help.
Question #1: I love using my cup during my period, but can I wear it in a pool or the ocean? What about a hot tub?
You most certainly can! In fact, we encourage it! Using your Saalt Cup or Disc while swimming or hanging out in the water is a great way to keep you (and your favorite yellow bikini) leak-free. The Saalt Cup creates a suction within the vaginal canal, forming a tight seal that will keep your period contained. Not to mention that swimming is a great form of exercise that can help with the cramping and discomfort that comes with your period. So cannon-ball with confidence!
Question #2: My Saalt Wash is too large for my carry-on bag. Can you help?
Absolutely! We offer a Travel-Size Saalt Wash exactly for this purpose. No need to try to squeeze your wash from one container to another as our Travel-Size is TSA-approved.
Question #3: I am getting on a plane and will be traveling for longer than 12 hours, so I know I will need to empty my cup at least once while on the plane. How do I go about this?
We know it can feel daunting to use your cup on a plane, but we promise that it is simpler than you would think! It is a good idea to choose a time without a lot of turbulence when you can easily stand and move around the plane. And this is a time when we would highly recommend our Saalt Travel Kit. Just take this little baggy with you into the bathroom and you can remove, rinse, and reinsert your cup without trouble. Another great option is our Saalt Wipes. You can use a wipe to give your cup and yourself a quick wipe before reinsertion.
Question #4: I am planning on some zip-lining and other excursions where I will not have access to a bathroom for quite a while. What are my options then?
We have a solution for this too! When in an environment where you will not have easy access to a restroom or toilet, having a reliable backup to your inserted period product is an important consideration. This is where your favorite pair of Saalt Wear comes in handy! While your cup or disc can give you up to 12 hours of leakproof wear, using a pair of our Saalt Period Underwear as a backup helps ensure that even if your cup or disc reaches capacity, you’ll be covered from stains or discomfort.
The Saalt Wear gusset will wick away moisture, leaving you feeling dry and comfortable so you can be present for when awhale peeks over the ocean waves or when you are asked to smile for the camera. Additionally, the gusset will trap your flow, so that you can wear your leggings or favorite skirt without having to wrap a sweater around your waist.
Question #5: I was hoping to only bring a carry on, but now that I will be on my period, I am going to have to pack a suitcase full of pads and boxes of tampons. I’ve been interested in trying reusable period care, but only have one more period before I leave for vacay. Is this a good time to give resusables a try?
While reusable period care can come with a learning curve, you may be surprised by how quickly you find the perfect fit! All it takes is some research, the willingness to trial and error, patience with yourself and your body, and a little bit of confidence (and your favorite Saalt Coaches to help you troubleshoot). Giving your Saalt products a try before you go on vacation is a great way to build confidence and find what techniques and tips work best for you and your unique anatomy. We have some great bundles that come with everything you need to start your reusable period care journey.
And guess what? With your Saalt products, there is no need for an extra suitcase. With Saalt Wear’s ultra-thin gusset, your Saalt Cup, and a Travel Kit for cleaning, you will be completely set for your whole period!
Question #6: Okay okay, I am ready to make the switch. If I order today, how long until I receive my order?
Great question and good for you for planning ahead! Our small but mighty shipping team works hard to get packages on their way to you within 48 business hours. If you choose free shipping, your package will arrive within 5-7 business days from the time it leaves our facility. There are also paid options at checkout if you need your package sooner. We send you an email with your tracking information so you can keep an eye on the progress of your products!
Question #7: I am leaving in the next day or two and need a cup! Is there anywhere I can purchase one in-store?
You can! Our Saalt Cups and Discs are retailed at different Target, CVS, and REI stores across the country. You can also now find them in a Whole Foods near you!
Question #8: This has been so helpful, but I still have questions. How can I speak to a Saalt Coach?
You can reach our Saalt Coaches in numerous ways. Our Coaches are available via Chat and SMS Monday-Friday from 8 am-3 pm. You can also find them using our Contact Page.
We hope this helps and that you have the absolute BEST vacation! Your period shouldn’t have to slow you down or put a damper on your plans, so we hope Saalt can help you have the least-noticeable periods of your life.
]]>One of the most irritating things for me was finishing a workout class or a bike ride and walking around with wet leggings afterward, especially in the winter–too high of a freeze risk.
Saalt Wear leak proof underwear has quite literally cleared up that mess for me. Yes, I still sweat. But the relief I feel when I know I’m working hard and that I’m not going to be sitting in a pool of sweat anymore is sweet. Like, I’ll-do-the-extra-burpees sweet (okay, maybe not that sweet).
The moisture wicking top layer pulls sweat away from the body and traps it in the ultra-absorbent gusset material. Then, it’s held in place by a leakproof barrier to ensure the moisture stays where you want it. The gusset material used in Saalt Wear dries quicker than cotton and is better at wicking moisture, so it keeps your vulva 😺 dry instead of letting it sit in sweat for hours on end.
It’s changed the game for me in so many ways and has made Saalt Wear my #1 choice for any exercise or outdoor activity. The Seamless Collection, specifically, is the moisture wicking underwear of my dreams! The body fabric is stretchy, free of panty lines (perfect for leggings), and wick away sweat beautifully.
Just recently I opted not to put my cup in on DAY TWO of my period, and just wore a Seamless Bikini under my leggings to hot yoga. I’m telling you, one of these days I’ll be humbled but for now I’m “experimenting.” Laying in Savasana drenched in sweat at the end of class, I set my intention to run straight to the bathroom after to assess the damage. I was shocked. Not only did the Saalt Wear gusset actually absorb my flow (and somehow not leak through?!), but my undies didn’t feel heavy from the sweat. Not many types of underwear are a match for 103-degree vinyasa practice, but Saalt Wear is a great contender.
Today, I slipped on my Seamless Thong before a run and set out to do a few miles. One mile in I felt the dreaded gush. The type where you aren’t sure if it’s period flow, discharge, urine, or all of them? I still had so much ground to cover and didn’t feel the need to stop and check. Why? Because my Saalt Wear was doing its job. I was able to wait and find out when I got home. Update: it was… JK.
If you’re active (or just real sweaty), I can’t think of any better underwear to tackle sweat than Saalt Wear. Check it out today!
XOXO, Saalt Coach Liz
]]>While your cup or disc can be worn for 12 hours, there are a couple of reasons why you may need to remove it early. Perhaps it is uncomfortable and you want to reinsert it, or maybe it is the heaviest day of your flow and you can feel that bubbling sensation that tells you it is about to overflow. Whatever the reason, it should not have to feel like a daunting task.
We are all about breaking down taboos and providing you with all of the tools and information you need to feel comfortable and confident during your period. Removing and cleaning your menstrual cup or menstrual disc in public does not have to be a scary or shameful process!
When in a public restroom, walking out of the stall to the bathroom sink to clean it may not be your favorite option. We are happy to share more about the tools we specifically designed to help with this and how to use them when out and about.
One of our handy traveling companions is our Saalt Travel Kit. You can quickly and discreetly slip this little bag into your purse or under your arm as you head into a public restroom or stall. And in this little bag are some great little helpers.
First, we have the Compact Sanitizer. Traditionally, the Compact Sanitizer was designed to be used as a sanitizing option for your cup or disc. Simply put water in it and put it in the microwave, or pour already boiling water into it. Now we know what you are thinking, there likely is not a microwave in the bathroom at the Olive Garden. But have you thought to set up the sanitizer so that you can remove your cup/disc and set it in there while you “do your business?” A great little hack!
In your Travel Kit there is also a squeeze bottle. You can fill it up before you go in the stall and give your cup or disc a quick rinse over the toilet, or even wash it with the travel-sized Saalt Wash.
Does this process feel a little lengthy with too many moving parts? Want another option that is quicker and more seamless? We get it! And boy do we have an exciting new option for you. The product you are looking for is our handy new Saalt Wipes!
Saalt Wipes are fragrance-free, biodegradable and flushable wipes that were specifically designed to clean your cup or disc on the go. Flushable, you say? That’s right! Our team worked extra hard to ensure that our wipes received the necessary qualifications for flushability. Our wipes are made with only 7 clean ingredients that are gentle on your cup/disc as well as your vulva. They are even plant-based!
Now you can remove your cup/disc, give it a thorough wipe with your Saalt Wipe, reinsert, flush, and you are good to go! (Don’t forget to wash your hands!) One more period-fear conquered with Saalt. So dance the night away or step onto that fishing boat with confidence. Saalt has got you covered.
In a pinch and do not have any of those options on hand - that is okay too! You can simply remove, empty, and reinsert your cup or disc. Just remember to give it a thorough cleaning later on.
You can check out this fun new product offering HERE and if you have any questions, our Saalt Coaches are on standby ready to help.
]]>Clean Hands and Lubrication
Before you begin inserting your cup, it's important to ensure your hands are clean. Start by washing them thoroughly. Additionally, using water as a natural lubricant can make the insertion process easier. So, no need to worry about drying off your cup beforehand. A water-based lubricant is another great tool to use to make lubrication more comfortable.
Finding the Right Position
Getting into a comfortable position is key to successful cup insertion. You can sit, squat, or stand with one leg raised. Feel free to experiment with different positions to find the one that suits you best.
PRO TIP: Shower Insertion - A Clean and Convenient Option
Inserting your cup in the shower can be a great option, especially when you're new to using cups. It eliminates the need to maneuver around the bathroom and provides a cleaner environment. Give it a try and see if it works for you!
Folding Techniques for Easy Insertion
Folding your cup is an essential step. There are various techniques you can try, such as the C-fold, punch-down fold, or seven-fold. Find the folding method that feels most comfortable and allows for easy insertion.
Inserting the Cup with Ease
When inserting the cup, insert the rim first into your vaginal canal. Remember that the vaginal canal is slightly slanted, so inserting at a horizontal angle, towards your tailbone, can make the process smoother. Take it slow and listen to your body as you insert the cup.
Ensuring a Proper Seal
Once the cup is fully inserted, allow it to pop open to create a seal with your vaginal walls. It may feel a bit unusual at first, but this sensation will subside as your body adjusts. Check the cup seal by running a finger around its base to ensure a secure fit. If you feel any folds, simply grab the base and give it a few twists to correct the seal. You can also gently push the vaginal wall away from the cup, giving the rim space to open up.
Cup Position and Your Anatomy
It's important to note that every person's anatomy is unique. The stem of your cup can either be fully inside you or slightly protruding, both of which are correct. Find what works best for your body and comfort level.
Celebrate your Success!
Congratulations! You've successfully inserted your menstrual cup. Take a moment to do a little happy dance and acknowledge your achievement.
Now that you're equipped with the knowledge and techniques for cup insertion, it's time to embark on your sustainable period journey. Remember, practice makes perfect, so don't be discouraged if it takes a few tries to get comfortable. Embrace the convenience, comfort, and eco-friendliness of menstrual cups. Start enjoying hassle-free periods and join the movement towards a more sustainable future. Take the leap and make the switch to menstrual cups today!
]]>
Prep
Before you begin, it is important to ensure that both your disc and your hands are squeaky clean! You can make sure your disc is ready by sanitizing it with the Saalt Steamer or boiling it for 4-5 minutes (you can find full instructions here). Next, wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water. This simple step will help reduce the risk of introducing any unwanted bacteria into your vaginal area.
Lubricant
Inserting your Saalt Disc can be a bit tricky at first, but one thing that can make the process that much more painless is to use a lubricant. We recommend using a water-based lubricant to protect the silicone of the disc, but you can also use water as a natural lubricant. This simple trick can enhance comfort and aid in seamless insertion. Apply a small amount of lubricant or water to the rim of your Saalt Disc to create a smooth surface, making the process effortless.
Positioning
Whether you choose to sit or squat, the key is to find a position where you feel most comfortable. Take a moment to relax and ensure you're in a position that allows easy access to your vaginal area. One popular stance is what we call the “Captain” stance with one foot propped up on the side of the tub or toilet while keeping your other foot on the floor. Comfort is essential for a stress-free insertion process.
The Figure Eight Technique
To insert your Saalt Disc, pinch the rim together to form a figure eight shape, ensuring the removal notch is at one end. This technique helps maintain the shape and integrity of the disc, making it easier to insert. Remember, practice makes perfect, so take your time to familiarize yourself with the figure eight technique.
Insertion
When inserting your Saalt Disc, aim to match the natural slant of your vaginal canal by angling the disc horizontally. This alignment ensures a comfortable fit and prevents any discomfort. Pointing towards your tailbone will guide the proper placement.
Securing the Rim
Once you've fully inserted the Saalt Disc, tuck the rim behind your pubic bone. This positioning ensures the rim stays securely in place, providing peace of mind throughout your day. Keep in mind that the soft basin of the disc will mold to your unique shape, so it may not feel fully expanded - but as long as the rim is secure and you are not experiencing any leaking or discomfort, you're good to go! After your disc is inserted, try doing a couple of squats or kegels to help it move into a secure position.
Congratulations! You've just learned the step-by-step process of inserting your Saalt Disc for ultimate comfort and convenience. By following these expert tips and tricks, you can maximize the effectiveness of your Saalt Disc and enjoy up to 12 hours of worry-free protection. Have any questions or need further assistance, don't hesitate to reach out to our dedicated Saalt Coaches here. We're always here to help you on your sustainable period journey. ]]>
You can use your Saalt Wear for as long as your leaks will allow! If you wear a light absorbency as a backup to your cup, disc, or tampon, you could go all day. If you wear a regular absorbency option on a heavy flow day, your Saalt Wear may reach capacity and need to be changed.
The different layers of the Saalt Wear gusset are specifically designed to give you that dry and leak-free fit. The top layer wicks away moisture while the inner layers absorb and trap it, ensuring that you feel comfortable and your clothes stay dry. Here’s a breakdown of the different options and how to choose which one is best for you.
Light Absorbency
The Light Absorbency is the one that you will most often find available in our Thong styles. It can hold 1-2 light tampons worth of liquid and is a great option for everyday leaks such as discharge or even as a backup for your cup or disc. If you are looking to replace your panty-liners, this absorbency is a great place to start. The Seamless Thong is a great choice!
Regular Absorbency
The next step up is our Regular Absorbency, which can be found in your favorite Cotton Bikini. This absorbency can hold 3 tampons or two regular pads worth of wetness. This is a great absorbency to wear on your light flow days or when you are anticipating your period. It’s another great choice to wear as backup to an internal period product and can handle everyday wetness like a champ.
Heavy Absorbency
Heavy Absorbency is a solid choice if you are looking for extra protection on really heavy days, or overnight. It was designed to hold 4 tampons or 3 regular pads worth of wetness. This is also a great option for light to moderate bladder leaks. If you find yourself crossing your legs before a sneeze or running to change after a jump on the trampoline, heavy absorbency is a great option. You can also wear these as your main form of period protection without worry. The Leakproof Lace High Waist is a wonderful option for that coverage you need with the style and elegance you deserve.
Super Absorbency
Super Absorbency is the newset to the Saalt crew! The Comfort Boyshort is one of our first styles that got an upgrade to the Super gusset. We understand that not everyone’s “heavy” leaks are the same, and sometimes a higher level of protection is needed. That is why we created Super! It can hold 6+ pads or 8+ tampons worth of liquid. Light to moderate bladder leaks are no match for the Super gusset, and wearing them overnight during your period is a surefire way to protect your sheets. Postpartum care is another wonderful use case for these. They are a much more comfortable alternative to those scratchy pads - because your down-there is already sensitive enough! Your body did an amazing thing and deserves amazing care.

October is more than just crisp autumn leaves, pumpkin spice lattes, and cozy sweaters. It’s Menopause Awareness Month - a time to illuminate the transformative journey our bodies go through. From our first period to the miracle of childbirth and the profound changes experienced during menopause, our bodies are a testament to resilience and adaptability.
Join us as we explore this remarkable voyage, shedding light on the physical changes and symptoms accompanying these significant life stages. We’ll also uncover the power of red light therapy in promoting intimate health, with a special focus on vFit Gold® from Joylux and Mommy Matters’s NeoHeat®.
From the moment one gives birth to the graceful transition into menopause, ourbodies undergo significant and unique changes.
Childbirth is a miraculous journey that brings new life into the world, but it also introduces a series of physical changes that can affect one’s life post-delivery. They include:
Pelvic floor impact: The process of carrying and delivering a baby places considerable stress on the pelvic floor - the complex network of muscles, ligaments, and tissues that support vital organs like the bladder, uterus, and rectum. This can lead to pelvic floor weakness, potentially resulting in bladder leakage.
Vaginal laxity: After vaginal delivery, some may experience vaginal looseness. This arises from the vaginal tissues stretching beyond their ability to bounce back during childbirth. The risk of vaginal laxity is higher for those who’ve delivered large babies or had multiple vaginal deliveries. Instruments used during delivery, like forceps, can also contribute to this sensation.
Sexual dysfunction: Tearing during childbirth may cause pain and discomfort during sexual intercourse. This discomfort may lead to sexual dysfunction, affecting one’s overall sexual well-being.
Reduced sensation: Changes in the pelvic region can sometimes lead to reduced feeling during sexual activity. This significantly impacts one’s sexual experience post-delivery.
Postpartum nerve damage: In some cases, childbirth can result in nerve damage, which may contribute to ongoing discomfort and altered sensations.
Incontinence: Those who undergo episiotomies during vaginal childbirth are at an increased risk of developing urinary incontinence, which is the inability to control urine. Those who experience severe tearing (third or fourth-degree tears) are at a higher risk of fecal incontinence - the inability to control bowel movements.
Check out this guide to learn more about postpartum changes.
Menopause marks the end of one chapter and the beginning of another in one’s life. This natural biological process brings about its own set of changes, such as:
Hot flashes and night sweats
Mood swings
Vaginal dryness
Weight gain and slowed metabolism
Sleep disruptions leading to insomnia
Changes in sexual desire due to low libido
Hair dryness or loss of scalp hair
Osteoporosis
Difficulty concentrating/memory lapses
Click here for a more in-depth look at these changes and how to manage them.
Innovative technology has opened new possibilities for addressing intimate health concerns. Among these remarkable advancements, red light therapy has emerged as a game-changer, offering hope and relief for many. Red light therapy supports energy production in the cells, fueling repair and regeneration.
Let’s explore the benefits of this technology on two remarkable devices - the vFit Gold® and NeoHeat®:
Designed by Ob-Gyns, vFit Gold from Joylux harnesses the power of red light therapy to rejuvenate and revitalize your intimate wellness. This gadget offers a range of benefits. With just a few sessions a week, you can expect:
Stronger pelvic floor: Childbirth and aging can weaken the pelvic floor muscles, leading to issues like bladder leakage. vFit Gold offers a solution by promoting a stronger pelvic floor, reducing the likelihood of leaks, and restoring your confidence.
Increased natural lubrication: Vaginal dryness is a prevalent concern during menopause, resulting in pain during sexual intercourse. vFit Gold enhances natural lubrication, alleviating this discomfort and making intimate moments more enjoyable.
Heightened sensation: By enhancing feeling, vFit Gold® makes intimate moments more enjoyable and fulfilling for you and your partner.
Sense of tightness: Many experience a sense of vaginal laxity over time. vFit Gold® promotes rejuvenation, which restores a sense of tightness, helping you feel more confident in your intimate health.
Now, let’s explore NeoHeat from Mommy Matters - a high-tech solution that focuses on healing trauma caused by vaginal childbirth. This device uses high-powered red and infrared LED light therapy to accelerate wound healing, boost circulation, reduce inflammation, and provide rapid pain relief.
What NeoHeat can do for you:
Faster healing: NeoHeat’s advanced technology aids in healing the trauma caused by vaginal childbirth, reducing recovery time and discomfort.
Improved circulation: By enhancing blood circulation in the treated area, this innovation supports a healthier recovery process, reducing the risk of infections and complications.
Reduced inflammation: Inflammation is a natural response to post-childbirth trauma. It causes discomfort and may lead to long-term issues. NeoHeat’s therapy helps reduce inflammation, providing relief and comfort.
Rapid pain relief: NeoHeat delivers fast pain relief, making postpartum recovery more manageable and less painful.

]]>First, let’s chat about what the pelvic floor is. Your pelvic floor is composed of structures such as muscles and connective tissues. These attach to the bones at the bottom of the pelvis and help to support the organs within.
The pelvic floor has a wide range of duties from those that we see to those that we don’t. Here are just a few:
Support: One of the main things that you may think of when you think of the pelvic floor is support! There are some significant organs contained within this area such as the bladder, urethra, uterus, vagina, anus, rectum and bowel. These organs require these muscles in order to stay in place and function correctly. It also supports the rest of the trunk of the body to make basic movements such as walking, running, and dancing away!
Using the restroom: These muscles play a direct role in our ability and comfort when using the restroom. Our capability to move out or keep in urine, gas, and stool are directly related to the strength of the pelvic floor.
Sex: The pelvic floor relaxes and contracts during sex to allow for vaginal penetration as well as increased vaginal lubrication and bloodflow.
Pregnancy and childbirth: Pregnancy changes the body in many different ways and the pelvic floor is a crucial part of it. Vaginal delivery is one of the biggest events the pelvic floor can play a part in. Contrary to popular belief, even if one does not have a vaginal birth, the pelvic floor is still greatly involved and impacted by pregnancy. The pelvic floor often bears much of the weight of the growing child along with the amniotic sac, placenta, the growing uterus, and all of the shifted and squished organs.
So as you can see, the pelvic floor is pretty important. But how do you know if yours is healthy? Sometimes pelvic floor changes can be a result of life changes such as age, pregnancy, or activity level. And other times there can be more other things going on that require medical assistance. So if you have questions, speaking with your doctor or a pelvic floor therapist are great places to start!
One common sign of pelvic floor weakness is bladder leakage when laughing, sneezing, coughing, jumping, squatting, etc. Something else to watch for is if you struggle to control your bowel movements or gas. Another thing that can occur when the pelvic floor becomes weak, is pelvic organ prolapse. Pelvic organ prolapse occurs when the pelvic organs do not have enough support, causing them to move lower in the body and even protrude outside the body or into one another.
Your pelvic floor can also undergo changes that result in pelvic floor tightness. A few signs of pelvic floor over-tightness would be frequent constipation or urinary frequency, pelvic pain, and painful intercourse.
One opportunity to check in on your pelvic floor strength and any changes you might be experiencing is during menstrual cup use. Here are some ways you can use clues from your menstrual cup experience to inform you of pelvic floor changes:
So what can you do if you fear your pelvic floor may be a little out of whack? While it’s great to seek out as much information as you can find, it’s best to speak with your medical provider about your concern and anything you may have noticed. We can offer general tips for pelvic floor health, like keeping active, not straining too hard when you make bowel movements, and incorporating tools such as a Squatty Potty are all great things to do! But the most important thing you can do is to listen to your body and speak to a doctor or pelvic floor therapist who can pinpoint exactly what you need. Because the pelvic floor muscles can be challenging to target, it is important to work with someone who can guide you and work with you along this journey.
And in the meantime, Saalt Wear leakproof underwear has got you covered! Need some extra backup for those leaks that can come with a shifting cup or a laugh that is a little too hard? Check out Saalt Wear and find the coverage and comfort that you need through all of life’s (and your body’s) changes.
]]>Period cramps. Ouch. The tell-tale sign that your period is on its way! As your uterus prepares to shed its lining, your body releases prostaglandins, a type of hormone that causes muscles in your uterus to contract. Our bodies are amazing, but dang those period cramps can get so annoying. During your period, it’s important to listen to your body and give it what it needs. We hear from menstrual cup users all the time how using a Saalt Cup helps them keep more in tune with their cycle and actually reduces cramping! The Saalt Soft Cup, designed for those sensitive to cramping, could be the perfect cup for you to find ease and comfort during your gentle Yin Yoga flow. Add in a pair of Seamless period underwear to allow you to move and stretch with optimal comfort, and you are all set.
Here are our top 5 favorite period-cramp easing yoga poses. These don't take long by any means and you don't have to be a professional yogi to do them. You don't even have to have a yoga mat! Try them in bed as you're waking up to get the day started on the right foot. While you try these relaxing poses, don’t let a wet tampon string or pillowy pad ruin your flow. Take our quiz to find the sustainable period care product that’s right for you and get 10% off to make the switch to period bliss!
Start at your hands and knees a bit wider than shoulder width apart and let your backside sink back in between your legs. This pose opens up your hips and lower back, especially helpful for those who experience achy lower back period cramps. Take three or four deep breaths, or stay as long as it feels right. Slowly shift your weight side to side to softly stretch out your side body as well.
For this pose, lay flat on your back pressing your shoulder blades against the mat. Then, slowly bend your knee, reach up with the opposing hand, and slowly let your knee fall toward the opposite side, creating a twist in your lower back and belly. Resist the urge to tug on your knee too hard and create too much pressure on your back. You can do this pose with just one knee or both at once. The twist in your belly essentially wrings out your muscles, allowing for a good release when you let go.
This is the money pose! It will melt all your menstrual worries away. Sit upright with your chest up and legs out in front of you, and as you exhale, bring your legs toward your body, with your feet meeting in the middle. If this pose is a little too hard on your knees, modify it until it feels good! It's all about feeling good friends. Keep your chest up, and slowly bend forward. This is the reproductive organ power pose! It also does wonders on relieving your digestive system, since unwanted stomach aches are a common symptom of PMS. For some extra delightful relief, lay flat on your back and bring your legs in the same way you did for the Bound Angle Pose. This really opens up your abdominal and chest muscles.
Find a wall, sit on the floor facing the wall, lay back and move your legs up against the wall, so your body makes a 90-degree-angle. This pose is fantastic for regenerating your circulation, lowering your blood pressure, and reinvigorating your nervous system. It essentially gives your brain a refresh and a break, putting the ahhhh in asanas.
Once you have gone through some of the previous poses and you're feeling good, gently come into savasana, or corpse pose. Simply lay on your back, keeping your legs, hips, shoulders, and neck aligned, close your eyes and take some deep slow breaths. Let your feet relax and fall to the sides a bit, and let your mind turn off for a moment. Stay here as long as needed, then when you're ready open your eyes, roll to your right side, and slowly return to a seated position.
There are so many wonderful options out there to help with period cramps, so do not feel resigned to be in pain for days every month! We hope you feel refreshed, and ready to take on the day after giving these a try. It's always great to take small moments for yourself and do what feels good.

Globally, nine in ten girls complete their primary education (equivalent to elementary school in the US), but only three in four complete their lower secondary education (US middle school or junior high equivalent.) There are as many as a dozen reasons that girls are kept out of school around the world. Saalt works year-round to tackle two of these through our impact program: lack of funding to send girls to school and lack of period care and proper sanitation in schools. Every September, we take a moment to focus on the challenge of getting - and keeping - girls in school.
Saalt is dedicating the month of September to sending girls back to school, ready to take on whatever the year throws at them. We’re funding the school fees of 30 girls every day during the month of September and donating 30 Saalt Cups a day to ensure that lack of access to period care isn’t a barrier to getting a great education.
Periods should end sentences, not school days.
If you got your period today, but you didn’t have access to period care, would you go to school? To work? Each month, 500 million women and girls around the world are faced with this decision.
Period poverty impacts women and girls in nearly every country around the globe, but in some regions the issue of period poverty is more pervasive than others. For example, in Chad and the Central African Republic, one in three girls said they were missing out on activities like school, work, and socializing because of their periods. 86% of girls in Kenya and 46% of girls in Nepal missed school in the past 12 months because of their period. In many cases, students miss so much school that they fall too far behind and ultimately drop out.
While it is not the only barrier to educational access, period poverty clearly contributes to girls disproportionately missing school in many countries. Some families are choosing between buying period care products for their daughters or paying for her school supplies - and we know both are vital to her success.
We know we have the tools to create change. Access to period care help keep girls in school, breaking the cycle of poverty for generations:
One study showed that 96.8% of school-aged girls in Ghana felt "more confident" while using clean period products during their period and 98.4% felt better able to concentrate at school. School attendance increased by 17% in Uganda among girls who received period care products.
We take a holistic approach to sustainable period care by supporting an environment where new cup users feel educated and empowered to adopt better long-term menstrual hygiene solutions, whether that means providing menstrual health education, or greater access to sanitation facilities like latrines and clean water sources. Throughout the month of September, Saalt is funding 1,510 educational scholarships for girls in rural Togo and Nepal, in partnership with Style Her Empowered and HER International.
We know that investing in the education of women and girls is good for economies, governments, and local communities. Completing one year of additional schooling leads to as much as 25% higher wages for that woman later in life; wages that she is likely to invest back into her family and community.
Thank you. Every purchase you make at Saalt is a step toward educational access for a girl or woman. Thanks to you, our amazing Saalt community, we have been able to donate over 60,000 Saalt Cups and fund 373,000 days in school in just five years.
Thank you for (period) caring.

The Saalt Compact Sanitizer allows you to sanitize your cup or disc wherever you are! All you need to do is fill it with water and pop it in the microwave with your cup or disc inside, then heat for 3 minutes (or until the water boils). Or, you can place your cup or disc in the empty sanitizer and cover with boiling water, cover, wait 3 minutes, and off you go! It is a discreet and small way to keep your period products clean.
The Saalt Cup Travel Wash was the next obvious choice to include in the kit. This bottle is a TSA-approved size, so no worrying about your full-size wash getting confiscated at security - it’s sized to stay in your carry-on!
Carrying a small bottle with you into a restroom is helpful when you need to remove and rinse your cup, so we went ahead and made one! We’re already hearing rave reviews for the Saalt Squeeze Bottle. ]]>You got your Saalt Wear reusable period underwear and used it - amazing! So . . . . now what?
No worries, we got you covered. We know it can seem a little daunting when trying to figure out the proper way to clean reusable period care products and you likely have lots of questions. So let’s go over the basics!
When you remove your used Saalt Wear, we recommend rinsing them with cold water. Gently rub the gusset in your hands until the water runs clear. This will help prevent staining as well as remove a majority of the flow from your Saalt Wear. Then, squeeze the excess water out of the gusset and body fabric. Now, you can set your Saalt Wear aside until you’re ready to do laundry.
When you wash them, we recommend doing so either by hand or in the washing machine. If you wash period underwear in the washing machine, the delicate cycle is definitely the way to go! Using cold water is also a great choice as this will help protect the gusset. If you are planning on washing them with other clothing (You can wash your Saalt Wear with other clothing?! Yes!), we recommend putting your Saalt Wear in a delicates bag.
Once your Saalt Wear are washed, just hang them to dry!
A few extra tips to help your Saalt Wear remain at their best for as long as possible:
Are you a visual learner? We get that. Watch this video of Saalt Coach Liz showing you how to wash period underwear for that little bit of extra help.
Take good care of your Saalt Wear, and they will take good care of you!

At Saalt, we are honored to be in community with such incredible innovators and change-makers in the period equity space.
Meet Synclaire, Founder of Point Blank Period and The Locker.
Synclaire founded and operates two nonprofit organizations, Point Blank Period and The Locker, which work in tandem toward menstrual equity.
Point Blank Period works to change the way we talk about periods by extricating periods from the shame and negativity that has been built around them. Synclaire says that in her youth she was excited to start her period. It wasn’t until she engaged with negative narratives about periods in the media that she started to feel shame and dread about menstruation. This shame, Synclaire says, keeps people from accessing the information and the care they need to manage their periods effectively.
“Social taboos and conversations based on patriarchal folklore are costing people their lives.” she says. “Poor menstrual healthcare can cause TSS, reproductive healthcare damage, and infections that can become fatal.”
Synclaire says that menstrual health education is inextricably linked to achieving menstrual equity, stating that “We need to have accessible, comprehensive reproductive health care available for everyone. It should be communal, so everyone, regardless of gender and experience, knows and understands menstruation in a way that is free of shame and negativity—in a way that is celebrated.”
The Locker (a growing collection of lockers in high-traffic, high-need areas) increases access to period care products, the education needed to use them, and written positive affirmations.
“A more equitable world has free, accessible, and adequate menstrual products for everyone,” says Synclaire. “Not only should people feel like they can access them, but also that there is no shame associated with accessing those materials. No shame in using that bathroom, in asking for that healthcare.”
Synclaire’s favorite part of her work is meeting all of the people who are excited about changing conversations around periods for the better. She says that many people are intimidated by the world of activism, that they feel they need degrees or to be area-experts through and through in order to participate, but she wants everyone to know that they are capable as they are.
“Anyone can engage in conversational activism,” Synclaire says. “If we stop shame and taboos at the root, where conversations happen, it can change so much. Practicing radical vulnerability around periods is something everyone can do.”

In 2015, Chelsea Von Chaz started #HappyPeriod with her mother, Cherryl Lucy-Warner, and an all-volunteer team providing people experiencing homelessness with period care products. #HappyPeriod slowly grew to be chapter based, and have now expanded their mission to serve all Afro-Indigenous people across the United States with period care products and menstrual health education that is comprehensive and rooted in self-care and body autonomy.
“My favorite part of the work we do at #HappyPeriod is working with young people,” Chelsea shares. “Like, people under the age of 20. They’re just so open—even if they’re trying to be closed up, they’re open and vulnerable and understanding. I love the ah-ha moments with people. I love when young people feel safe and empowered.” In addition to educating young people, Chelsea says that she finds a lot of joy in talking with parents about the importance of having conversations about menstrual health with their children.
“I hear from parents sometimes who haven’t yet given their kid ‘the period talk’ yet, because it makes them nervous. I always tell them, ‘You have to break the cycles. If you don’t do it, then there is something there that is rooted in shame.’ So, you’re indirectly telling your kids that it is something to be silent about because it’s bad, it’s horrible.”
Breaking intergenerational silence around periods can be the first of many steps toward opening up conversations about advocating for one's own healthcare needs and boosting confidence in self-advocacy more broadly.
“It’s important because periods aren’t going to stop. We’re seeing some progress now because people are talking about it. And we all want better. But we’re dealing with PCOS, with fibroids, with PMS, with PMDD. In many cases, we’re suffering in silence, we’re experiencing these things in silence.”
Chelsea still sees a lot of opportunities for continued progress in the way we advocate for period equity and whose voices are at the center of the conversation. She wants to see greater diversity in the stories being told and a movement from menstrual equality to menstrual equity.
“I’ve learned that there’s still a lot of discrimination in the world of combating period poverty. There tends to be one face, or one type of face represented. For example, people with periods who are also living with disabilities are often left out of the conversation,” Chelsea says.
In addition to bringing attention to more experiences across the spectrum of people living with disabilities, Chelsea is advocating for greater first-person storytelling when it comes to educating the world about period poverty and how we can achieve menstrual equity.
“I see too much white saviorism and not enough different people being involved in the conversation. I want to see more Muslim women, for example, in the conversation. Same with people who live in India. My women, my girls, my trans folks who are in India… These are the types of voices that I think should be heard more, instead of someone else telling their story.”
Menärchē, Chelsea’s newest project, is a shame-free menstrual care marketplace that offers choices in products and brands, educates shoppers about their period in the process—and funds menstrual equity initiatives, like #HappyPeriod.
Chelsea says that she has met so many people who are innovating in the period care space, but weren’t able to compete with larger brands for shelf space in spite of having great products and fighting for menstrual equity. Menärchē will feature many of these smaller brands, so these innovators have space to shine, too.

As someone interested in period underwear, you might be wondering, “What even are these chemicals and what do they have to do with period underwear?” We’re here to clear up the confusion so you can make an informed choice about how to care for your body.
We do not use any PFAS in our fabrics or finishes and test all materials for a wide range of known hazardous substances, including PFAS and other known harmful chemicals.
We also do our best to be transparent about our materials and our production process. Because we are a team of people with periods, (who are all in love with our Saalt Wear) we would never add something to our garments that we wouldn’t want in our own underwear! We are passionate about doing the right thing for our customers and for our planet.
In fact, as part of our pre-launch testing protocol for Saalt Wear, we discovered in early 2020 that one of our fabrics included one chemical categorized as PFAS. We immediately contacted the supplier and went to work redeveloping the material with a new finish that did not include the PFAS chemical or any other harmful substances. We also contacted all of our suppliers to double check that no other fabrics, finishes, elastics or other components had any PFAS included. Once the fabric in question was redeveloped, we even tested the new fabric with a third-party lab to triple-check that no PFAS was used in the new material. All of the redevelopment and testing added months to our development calendar and delayed the launch of our first line of Saalt Wear by almost five months.
Despite resulting in months of lost revenue, we were committed to delivering safe period underwear to our customers and decided it was better to delay our product launch and take the financial hit than to bring to market a product that we couldn't stand behind. The final version of our Saalt Wear was first introduced on November 30, 2020, and we're proud to say that our products have never been treated with PFAS.
Let’s break it down. PFAS, or per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, are commonly referred to as “forever chemicals,” meaning they take a really long time to break down. Because these chemicals do not biodegrade, they can build up in the human body and interfere with our systems. The most commonly studied PFAS chemicals “can cause reproductive and developmental, liver and kidney, and immunological effects,” according to the EPA.
This can sound a bit scary, especially considering that these chemicals are found in a wide range of common household products, including non-stick cookware, rain jackets or umbrellas, shampoo, dental floss, some food packaging, and even tap water. As new studies reveal more and more evidence of adverse health consequences, the conversation about PFAS continues to change. For further information about the history and science of PFAS, check out these additional informational resources from the CDC, EPA, and NIH.
PFAS were developed and became commonly used in many consumer products because they are extremely proficient at repelling liquids like water and oil. Some period underwear companies have used PFAS in their underwear as a stain- and water-resistant coating to protect the fabric despite advertising that their period underwear is “organic and nontoxic.” Society is now learning, however, that repeated exposure to high levels of PFAS can be dangerous.
We thought you’d never ask! Because PFAS do not break down (they won’t degrade in nature), they are becoming more and more prevalent in the world. This means that all types of products can be exposed to PFAS inadvertently in shipping or manufacturing (kind of like that warning you see on granola bars that says, “manufactured in a facility that also handles peanuts”).
We do not use PFAS in any of our fabrics or finishes, and to underscore this, Saalt has tested our leak proof underwear through third-party facilities and results have varied between 0 and 10 ppm (parts per million). This is well below the level of 100 ppm which is generally considered the threshold for intentional PFAS use. Extremely low levels of PFAS, like 10 ppm are indicative of accidental exposure through contact with equipment or other products containing PFAS. A test result under 10 ppm is considered “undetectable” by most testing facilities. When PFAS are deliberately added to fabrics, they will appear in much larger quantities.
We understand that you likely do not want to just take our word for it - so here are our most recent testing results! Different styles, collections, sizes, and colors of Saalt Wear were randomly pulled from our distribution center. These Saalt Wear garments were then tested for blanket fluorine presence (the class of chemicals that includes all PFAS) and we are happy to say that the "ND" that you are seeing in all of those boxes indicates NOT DETECTED!
Your body— and the planet—thank you for being thoughtful in your decisions about period care! As a B Corp, we’re committed to providing safe period underwear that is also the most effective, responsibly produced, and best performing period underwear on the market for our customers. We source our materials from factories that have a reputation for prioritizing safe, green textiles and who are constantly improving manufacturing to be better for the environment. In fact, the facility where Saalt period underwear is made was the first apparel manufacturing facility in the world to be rated Platinum by the US Green Building Council (USGBC). And some of our fabrics are OEKO-TEX or bluesign approved, which are internationally recognized standards for making textiles cleaner and more environmentally friendly.
